23rd February 2014 – Harry Mitchell Leisure Centre, Smethwick, West Midlands, Great Britain

Only days after British Weightlifting learned that UK Sport planned to withdraw all its £1.8m funding, squad members were back in action at the English Championships in Smethwick in the West Midlands. With the Commonwealth Games in July it was not just titles at stake but also the chance to impress the England selectors by meeting the minimum selection standards at the first opportunity.

“It was obviously really disappointing when UK Sport announced that they were going to look at potentially cutting the funding of weightlifting,” said British Weightlifting’s Chief Executive Ashley Metcalfe as he watched the competition. “Must have been a really tough decision for UK Sport, not easy at all. The encouraging thing from our point of view was that we weren’t losing all the funding as they promised to continue the funding of the IPC Powerlifting for our disabled lifters.

“What they did say to us was refocus, try and look at the sport, try and come back and re-present and go to appeal if you feel as though you’d like to. It has given us the opportunity to refocus our overall program, what’s working what’s not, and we’ll go back to UK Sport early next month in a much stronger position and hopefully they’ll have the confidence to be able to say weightlifting does need support and weightlifting does need backing.”

The former Yorkshire county cricketer is though philosophical about the situation. “Its all about success. There’s no God given right to funding. if you don’t hit milestones you don’t hit trajectories you don’t deserve funding so realistically as a sport we’ve nobody else to blame but ourselves. Over a long period of time now, a number of years, we’ve not quite hit target. UK Sport have been very patient. They’ve tried to help us along that path. What they’ve now said is you need to refocus, you need to revisit and then come back and have a look and see whether you can convince us that actually the new strategy will reap rewards both at Rio and 2020.

“The UK Sport funding is all about elite lifting and elite lifters and supporting those, giving them the best chance of success at World Championships and Olympic Games. That’s an area we still have to improve at and we have to make sure the programmes we put in place actually produce those results and hopefully people will start to see over the next three, six, nine, twelve months some changes that will actually start to produce hopefully that success on the big stage.

“The difficulty is because Tommy (Yule), the Performance Director, has only been in the post for seven or eight months. Those results are coming through but we haven’t quite had a full amount of time to see the real benefits and that will come over a number of years.”

Yule, a former British Olympic weightlifter, and Metcalfe watched as out of the nearly one hundred competitors taking part in Smethwick over the two days, thirteen took that first step to being part of the eight men and seven women strong English team heading to Glasgow in July.

“Absolutely delighted with the standard of lifting,” said Metcalfe attending the event for the first time in the role he only took on towards the end of last year. “Our leading GB lifters and elite lifters have all performed remarkably well.”

Amongst them 2010 Commonwealth Games bronze medalist Zoe Smith demonstrated she was nearly back to full fitness. Not only did she score six for six whilst lifting 39kg over the 167kg minimum qualification standard in the 58kg category, but her combined total was 9kg more than that of the winner in Delhi four years ago.

In the 63kg category Emily Godley retained her title beating Sarah Davies by a single kilogram with both not only meeting their required minimum qualification standards for Glasgow but also for the World Championships. And in the 69kg category current European under 15 and Youth Champion Rebekah Tiler cheerfully accepted her good and failed lifts equally as she also progressed to the next stage of selection.

“She’s got great credentials and is on the right trajectory to perform well in years to come,” Metcalfe said adding “but there are others now starting to come through the pipeline aswell and that is the encouraging thing, and for the future of British Weightlifting we need to encourage that, we need to grow those numbers and get better lifters to compete at the highest level.”

In the men’s competition Ben Watson showed superb form in the 105kg category. His combined total of 335kg, is already 25kg over the minimum required for his selection and just 3kg short of the 2010 winning total. With five months left for training the 23 year old is likely to be challenging for the medals when the weightlifting starts in Glasgow.

However being in a position to challenge the traditionally strong Asian and East European nations for medals at an Olympic Games may prove harder for any of the squad and require the kind of support made possible through funding.

“The funding is there to put together a full elite programme so it will be able to support the athletes to make sure that they can train in the right environment, the right culture and that they’ve got the right support behind them, doctors, physios, psychologists, whatever they require to get that extra one, two, three percent out of them when they go out on the stage to lift” explained Metcalfe. “That’s what we are there to do. We need to make sure they are fit, we need to make sure they’re stronger.”

In a few weeks British Weightlifting will discover how much of that support they will be able to provide future competitors.
