With so much happening on the track it is not unusual for passions to run high amongst the riders and spectators during a cycle speedway fixture. Officials however are expected to stay uninvolved emotionally which can be difficult in such a small community when they invariably have ties to clubs and riders.

Steve Rumbold, father of rider Charlie Rumbold, has been a flag man at Ipswich Cycle Speedway Club for a little over five years but was excluded during the first fixture of last season for becoming too involved.

“It was quite an exciting match with some contentious things going on and I put my hand up when one of the riders moved at the tapes, which was obviously not the done thing, so I got told off for that understandably.”

Rumbold managed to remain in control for most of the remainder of the match but then commented as another incident occurred.

“As soon as I said that I thought ‘I shouldn’t have said that, none of my business really’. You’ve got to stay unbiased throughout everything and after a discussion with the referee we decided that it was best I finished the match at that point and left it at that.

“Some of the races they take hold of you a little bit and when its your boy as well and he does something good and you gain victory where you was losing you can’t help but get excited.

“Sometimes it is a bit difficult to keep it under control and the odd fist pump comes out now and again.”
