2014 English Weightlifting Championships

2014 English Weightlifting Championships

Thirteen competitors met the minimum qualifying standards for the England weightlifting team for the 2014 Commonwealth Games in July at the first selection event during the national championships in Smethwick. How well they will be able to perform on the world’s stage beyond then however may be dependent on whether British Weightlifting can persuade UK Sport to reverse their decision to cut the associations funding.

British Inline Speed Skating 2013

British Inline Speed Skating 2013

Motor racing commentator Eddie Jordan is the spitting image of John E. Fry but whilst both like wheeled sports Fry’s interest is in the human powered variety.

Currently the chairman of Birmingham Wheels Roller Speed Club, one of only eight inline speed skating clubs in the country, he has an encyclopaedic knowledge of inline skating and has been involved in many of the important moments in the sport’s history in this country over the past 30 years. He now coaches the next generation of skaters. This isn’t without its problems.

Judo

Judo

If horse racing is the sport of kings then maybe judo should be considered the sport of leaders. Over the years statesmen such as President Theodore Roosevelt of the US and Vladimir Putin, the former Prime Minister of Russia, have practiced the sport. The chairman of the organising committee for the London 2012 Olympic Games, Lord Coe (or Sebastian Coe as he is known to athletics fans), trained alongside William Hague, the former leader of the British Conservative Party and currently the countries Foreign Secretary. And in acting well known names such as James Cagney, Chuck Norris and Peter Sellers have enjoyed the challenges of judo.

Handball

Handball

“It’s fast, dynamic, aggressive, powerful. I don’t think there’s any other sport like it!” enthuses Britain’s Holly Lam-Moores as she explains why she plays handball.

To anybody watching the sport for a first time, particularly in those countries where it is less popular such as the UK and US (where it is known as team handball), it probably appears to be a modern indoor hybrid of Basketball or Netball and, American Football or Rugby with the quick passing, athleticism and body contact. In fact the sports origins can be traced back to a game played by the Greeks called Urania and another played by the Romans called Harpaston, with similar games having been played over the following centuries as far afield as Central Europe, Greenland and Egypt.
