Great Britain’s Aaron Cook retained his European -80kg taekwondo title when the final took a dramatic twist in the last second.

Trailing to world ranked number one Ramin Azizov of Azerbaijan for most of the contest he was losing 11-9 with only three seconds left. Then a typically frantic Cook attack to attempt to at least tie the match caused Azizov to leave the ring, an offence deemed serious enough by the referee to warrant a gam-jeom penalty for the Azerbaijan. Resulting in his disqualification, Cook took the 2012 title in one of the four categories to be contested in this summer’s Olympics.

Both competitors looked stunned. With the buzzer having almost immediately sounded for the end of the round Cook had left the mat as both competitors prepared for a golden point round. Despite Cook then attempting to console his rival, Azizov looked inconsolable as the Briton’s supporters celebrated their competitors first win over the Azerbaijan.

“I was so fortunate to get him out of the ring right at the end” said Cook.

“I have lost three times to him so to beat him is so sweet”

Cook’s win followed that by fellow Briton Michael Harvey in the -63kg final earlier in the evening. The Mancunian secured his first European title after the referee stopped the final against Vasileios Gaitainis of Greece in the last round with the score at 14-2.

Along with Lutalo Muhammad’s gold in the -87kg final and bronze for both Martin Stamper and Amir Badr, these two golds resulted in the host nation’s team topping the men’s championship rankings.

Muhammad having come back from 10-1 down in his quarter final against Nikola Bojo of Croatia to win 12-11 on golden point paid tribute to the support from his coach Joseph Salim.

Earlier in the Championships the women’s +73kg final also came to a startling conclusion when Rosanna Simon Alamo of Spain was disqualified for multiple penalties whilst one point ahead of Anne Caroline Graffe of France.

A 7-4 win over reigning champion Edina Kotsis of Hungary in the women’s -57kg final gave Floriane Liborio of France the title in the second of the categories to be contested by hosts Great Britain at London 2012 with the Turkish duo of Servet Tazegul in the men’s -68kg and Nur Tatar in the women’s -67kg winning the finals of other two.

18th and 19th April 2012 – Basketball Arena, Olympic Park, Stratford, London Great Britain

Australia saved their best until the final to win the London International Invitational Wheelchair Rugby Tournament in the Basketball Arena on the Olympic Park with a 71-48 victory over Great Britain.

Having chosen to rest Ryley Batt, considered the best player in the world, for most of their previous round encounter which they lost by a single point, back to full strength the Australians proved to strong for the hosts.

Whilst Britain’s Aaron Phipps ended the final as top scorer with 33 goals it was the combination of Batt’s goals along with the 22 scored by team mate Chris Bond that proved decisive.

Tunisia won the London Handball Cup after two wins and a draw with South Korea taking second place.

With Argentina and Great Britain filling the other two places, the round robin tournament gave the home nation an opportunity to face, in their build up for the Olympics in the summer, three teams who had qualified through their regional tournaments.

Suffering heavy defeats against the more experienced Argentinians and Tunisians in the first two matches a narrow loss against South Korea showed that lessons were beginning to be learned.

Despite still recovering from injury Britain’s Steven Larsson managed to finish top scorer of the tournament with 19 goals ahead of South Korea’s Yi-Kyeong Jeong on 14, whilst committed performances by Gawain Vincent and Ben Murray showed signs that the efforts to develop the sport in Britain were beginning to pay off.

Mark Buckingham and Miles Burton retained their titles at the British Elite Duathlon Championships with victories for Lucy Gossage, Richard Horton, George Schwiening and Kate Curran in the other races.

Horton had managed to keep up with Buckingham and Matthew Gunby for the first lap but the pace took its toll on the second lap with the junior entering transition around 10 seconds behind them.

As Buckingham and Gunby worked together out in front on the bike, the chasing pack refused to give up with Rhys Davey clawing back 20 seconds by the end of the 8 laps. Though quicker through transition it was Lawrence Fanous who then took on the challenge of catching the leaders, but Buckingham had saved his best until the end and pulled away to finish just over 10 seconds ahead of Gunby with Horton separating him and third men’s finisher Fanous.

The scenario was similar for the elite women with Lucy Gossage and Racheal Bamford taking an early lead on the first run and then continuing to pull away from the rest of the field on the bike. A faster transition saw Gossage out first for the final run lap where she continued to increase her lead to finish a minute ahead of Bamford followed by junior George Schwiening and then Kate Robson.

Great Britain’s 33-20 loss to Poland in the women’s European Handball Championship qualifier all but makes their progress into the latter stages of the competition impossible.

Trailing by two goals at half time they were then overpowered by the stronger Polish team in the second half.

Victories for Chris Hoy in the men’s keirin and sprint, and for the women’s sprint and pursuit teams gave the home crowd something to cheer at the final round of the UCI Track Cycling World Cup in the new velodrome at the Olympic Park in Stratford.

With victory in the women’s sprint going to the Beijing 2008 bronze medalist Guo Shuang, Olympic champion Victoria Pendleton was philisophical about her 4th place in the women’s sprint, after losing to Hong Kong’s Lee Wai Sze in their bronze medal decider, commenting that with she felt it was too early to be in top shape with the Olympics still several months away.

Most heart stopping moment for the home fans though probably came during the latter stages of the women’s Omnium elimination race also known to many as the Devil takes the Hindmost” As riders were ruled out one by one Britain’s Laura Trott repeatedly left her surge for the line until the last moment. Finally with only herself and world champion Tara Whitten left she yet again took the outside line finishing just ahead of the Canadian. With priority being placed on the team pursuit it is possible Trott will not be attempting to improve on her overall third place in the Omnium when it makes its debut as an Olympic event, but the praise heaped on her by Performance Director Dave Brailsford suggests that British Cycling have found another star of the future.

Aaron Cook took the gold medal in the men’s under 80kg category at the London International Invitational Taekwondo Tournament sweeping aside competition from the reigning men’s under 87kg world champion, Iran’s Yousef Karami, along the way.

Denied the chance to fight Ramin Azizov in the final because of an injury sustained by the Azerbaijan during his previous match against Korea’s Sang-Bin Lee, Cook was declared the winner having earlier secured his place with an offensive kick in sudden death which gave him victory over Spain’s Nicolas Garcia.

The event held at the cities ExCel Arena also served as the sports test event ahead of next years Olympic Games.

Only Shirley Elliot of France could stop a Brazilian clean sweep of the gold medals at the London International Invitational Judo tournament that also served as the sports test event ahead of next years Olympic Games.

A win for Bruno Mendonca in the under 73kg category on the Saturday was followed by victories for Hugo Pessanha in the men’s under 90kg category and, Maria Portela in the women’s under 70kg category on the Sunday.

Russia’s Kamil Magomedov had earlier brushed aside the challenge of Britain’s Matthew Pursey but found Pessanha to strong in the final. Sally Conway’s win by ippon over Germany’s Laura Vargas Koch in the final seconds of their Golden Score round put the Briton through to the final but like Magomedov she found her Brazilian opponent to strong.

Hosts Great Britain won their opening match of the women’s London Handball Cup against Angola 22-20 as they continued to gain experience ahead of next years Olympic Games. Held in the newly built Handball Arena in the Olympic Park in Stratford, London the tournament was part of the London Prepares series of test events.

The British women opened well taking a quick three goal lead before Angola managed to get into the game and pull even. Each time Angola appeared to be building a lead the British would draw them back and the team would then trade goals before one or the other would again start to create cushion. As the match entered the final few minutes the score was again close until goals first from Nina Heglund and then the last from Britt Goodwin with 27 seconds to go opened up too wide a gap for the Angolan’s to overcome in the time available.

Opened with China beating Slovakia 28-26 the tournament also involves Poland and Austria and will see the teams divided into two groups of three with the top two in each group going through to the semi final stages at the weekend.

Only three goals separated Great Britain from winners Israel at the end of the first match of their 2013 World Handball Championship qualification campaigns, with seven goals from Israel’s Chen Pomeranz and nine from Britain’s Steve Larsson contributing towards the final 26-29 scoreline.

A flurry of goals from Israel saw them take a strong lead but Britain fought back to 14-16 at half time. The score remained close for the rest of the match with Israel only able to extend their lead in the closing minutes.

“Israel did under estimate us” said Great Britain assistant coach Bill Baillie afterwards. “They were a bit complacent because they had beaten us five times before, but they had to keep all their best players on the court for most of the time to stop us.”

Great Britain v Russia Women’s 2012 European Handball Championship Qualifier

Losing 24-16 doesn’t sound like a good result. Certainly not usually a reason to celebrate. But after their defeat to Russia in their 2012 European Handball Championship qualification match that is what the British women’s team did.

Why ? Because most people had expected a rout so such a narrow defeat showed how much the team have progressed.

Russia are the current World Champions having retained the title in 2009 which they won in 2007 so retaining the title they had won in 2005 and had previously won the title in 2001.

In other words Russia have won the title four times out of five over the past decade.

Russia took silver at the 2008 Beijing Olympics.

Russia is a major handball nation.

Britain is a minnow.

It’s teams have never qualified for the World Championships.

It’s team have never qualified for the European Championships.

It’s teams have never qualified for the Olympics.

After several years with it’s players spread out across Europe trying to gain experience at their own expense the team has only this year been able to set up a British training base, at Crystal Palace in South London.

“Physically we are improving a lot” said head coach Jesper Holmris after the match as he commented on the new centre. “We have a good physical strength and conditioning coach and we can fine tune our tactics.”

“It is the best team in the world we were playing against and the first half was just amazing” he continued.

The game had remained goalless for several minutes and when the first was scored it was from Britain’s Kathryn Fudge and not from the more experienced opponents. The Russians quickly hit back but by half time they only had a narrow 14 – 10 lead.

The second half continued at the same pace. British goalkeeper Sarah Hargreaves made thirteen saves and defensive work during the week after the 34-18 loss to Montenegro paid off as the Russians struggled to extend their lead.

Holmris, whilst pleased with their spirit, would have liked his team to have scored a few more goals in the second half, but their tactics throughout the match had kept the Russians guessing with seven different British players getting their names on the score sheet.

“We’re really happy with the performance,” said captain and top British scorer Lynn McCafferty afterwards. “After Montenegro we worked on several areas of our game to identify what we could do better. We worked on our defence and some of the little mistakes we made, and I think we’ve shown today that we managed to fix things.”

Alistair Brownlee wins the final round of the French Grand Prix Series triathlons in La Baule, France just ahead of team mate and brother Jonathan Brownlee with Maik Petzold the teams third finisher in 12th. The Brownlee’s EC Sartrouville team retained the title after winning every round of the 5 race series which is based on a team format with points awarded for the finish position of each of the first three team members.

In the women’s race Svenja Bazlen’s win helped to give Tri Club Chateauroux 36 second place on the day but overall race winners Poissy Triathlon also took the women’s title.
