Gold for Great Britain’s Jonathan Brownlee in the men’s race sealed a successful weekend at the ITU World Triathlon Series event in Madrid, Spain after the win for Non Stanford and bronze for Jodie Stimpson in the women’s event the day before.

Brownlee continued his rivalry with Spain’s Javier Gomez as worked together on the bike leg together before pulling away from the start of the run to give himself a 50 second lead by the finish.

Stanford had to work hard on the bike as part of the chase pack reeling in early leaders Sarah Groff of the USA and Nicky Samuels of New Zealand in the women’s race on Saturday. Making an immediate break coming out of transition onto the run put her into the lead ahead of team mate Stimpson and Germany’s Anne Haug. Taking command she increased the gap to a 26 seconds giving her time to even collect a Welsh flag as she ran the last hundred metres to the finish line.

Revenge was sweet for Stoke Mandeville Storm in their 2013 Great Britain Wheelchair Rugby National’s final against Kent Crusaders at The Dome in Doncaster.

Having missed out on the Coloplast League Division 1 title to the Crusaders due to their poorer goal difference in the matches between the two teams, the Storm held their long term rivals for the first three quarters of the match before building the pressure to finish 52-44 winners.

Twelve teams took part in the matches held over the three days of the Bank Holiday weekend and involved a number of new players and teams including the Leicester Tigers who are receiving support from the rugby club.

A strong bike leg gave Steve Clark victory over Germany’s Stefan Teichert in the Brigg Bomber quadrathlon which along with being a round of the World Quadrathlon Federation World Cup was also the European and British Championships.

Over four minutes down at the end of the kayak section he reduced the gap to a few seconds over a minute by the start of the run.

As he trailed Teichert along the river side course into the Lincolnshire countryside Clark slowly continue to close the gap until with around 4km left he took the right hand side of the road and, shielded from Teichert’s view for a few seconds by a car picking its way between runners, he passed the German. Teichert briefly picked up his pace but Clark pulled away to win in a time of 2:40:15.

Third place went to Phil Westoby who, after the second fastest swim and bike times but the 16th fastest kayak leg, produced the fastest run of 38:37.

Lisa Maria Hirschfelder won the women’s race in 3:09:46.

European Cyclo-Cross Championships 2012

3rd November 2012 – Chantry Park, Ipswich, Suffolk, Great Britain

Great Britain’s cycling success story continued with a win in the elite women’s European Cyclo-Cross Championships for Helen Wyman giving the country its first senior international championship gold medal.

After a good road start Wyman, Sanne van Paassen of the Netherlands and Britain’s Nikki Harris soon drew away from the rest of the field. By the middle of the race Harris had fallen victim to the battle between Wyman and van Paassen and started to drop back. Wyman and van Paassen continued their battle, swapping the lead through to the end. Knowing she had beaten her Dutch rival in an uphill sprint earlier in the week gave Wyman confidence as they raced side by side for the finish line but it was only as they reached the line that she knew she had the title to add to her British one.

Wyman’s win was only Britain’s second gold medal in total in an international cyclo-cross championships, the first being Roger Hammond’s win in the Junior Men’s World Cyclo-Cross Championships held in Roundhay Park in Leeds in 1992.

The under 23 men’s and junior men’s races both ran to form with Dutch victories in both for pre race favourites Mike Teunissen and Mathieu van der Poel who continued his unbeaten run in international competition since winning the title in 2011.

Van der Poel took the lead from the start and quickly built up a lead that allowed him to carefully pick his best route through the serpentine sections of the course before finishing 31 seconds ahead of Clément Russo of France who beat Yannick Peeters of Belgium to second place in a sprint finish.

Teunissen’s win was more heavily contested with the lead changing several times for the first half of the race before a small group managed to pull away. As they sprinted for the finish fellow Dutchman Corne van Kessel suddenly appeared from behind Teunissen to make a late challenge but it was in vain as Teunissen, the 2011 silver medalist, reached the line first.
